About Snake Identifier

Snake Identifier is an Australian field guide built to help you compare the snake you saw with plausible local species. It is a sister project to Spider Identifier Australia.

How the guide works

The guided identifier starts with location, approximate length, markings and colour. These clues are compared with a structured species catalogue. Optional habitat information can help narrow the results. Photo identification extracts visible clues and uses the same catalogue; it does not provide a confirmed identification.

Snake colours change with age, lighting and location. Different species can look very similar, and some require specialist examination to tell apart. A useful result is a shortlist to compare, not permission to approach or handle a snake.

Research and photographs

Species pages draw on Australian museums, government wildlife information and specialist taxonomic references. Each page links to its sources and identifies its photograph’s creator and licence. We use genuine photographs for species identification. Where published sources disagree or a species is poorly documented, we say so.

Snakebite information follows Australian first-aid guidance from ANZCOR and other reputable Australian health sources. For any suspected snakebite, call 000 rather than waiting for an identification.
