Snake Identifier helps visitors compare Australian snakes using a guided questionnaire, species profiles and optional photo analysis. You do not need an account to use these features.

Photos and identification clues

When you use photo identification, your browser first reduces the image and removes embedded metadata such as camera location tags. Our server validates the reduced image and removes metadata again before sending it to OpenAI for analysis. We do not add uploaded photos to the website’s media library or keep a photo gallery of visitor uploads. Temporary processing files are removed after the request.

Your selected state is used by our matching tool. We do not request your precise location. Please avoid uploading photographs containing identifiable people, addresses or other private information.

OpenAI processes the image to return visible features. We request that the response is not stored as application history. OpenAI may retain content in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days by default, with exceptions described in its API data controls. Its processing may occur outside Australia.

Security and website operation

Our hosting and security services may record information such as IP addresses, requested pages, browser information and request times to operate the website and investigate misuse. The photo feature uses a hashed IP identifier and short-lived request counters to limit automated use. WordPress and security features may use cookies where needed for site operation and administrator access.

Messages

If you email us, we receive the contact details and information you include. We use these to respond to your enquiry or assess a correction. Please do not send medical records or urgent requests for identification or treatment.
